Chefs Make a Difference at Charles R. Drew Charter School!

8-24-11_Drew_1

As our nation faces the largest crisis of childhood obesity in our history, our local chefs began their own crusade at Charles R. Drew Charter School in Atlanta’s East Lake community.

Chef Michael Deihl and Chef Karen Patton recently adopted Charles R. Drew Charter School in the Chefs Move to Schools program, spearheaded by First Lady Michelle Obama in her Let’s Move! program.  Chef Deihl, the Executive Chef at East Lake Golf Club and Chairman of the Board for the American Culinary Federation Greater Atlanta Chapter, has always had a passion for healthy cooking and for giving back to his community. Combine his love for children and a true belief in their future, and you have a winning recipe!  As part of the East Lake community, Chef Deihl and the East Lake staff follow the incredible example set by Mr. Tom Cousins and the CF Foundation of giving back to the community through the work of the East Lake Foundation. Each and every member of the East Lake family has a strong commitment of giving back to their community.

Chef Karen Patton received her culinary training from Atlanta Technical College and has had her own catering business for nearly five years. Chef Patton has joined the Chefs Move to Schools initiative working with Drew Charter School and has formed a nonprofit organization that focuses on educating seniors, diabetics and children on nutrition and the benefits of local growing.

As schools go back into session and the kids gather, don't forget we can all make a difference in sharing knowledge of good nutritional choices with our kids and help break the obesity epidemic with our youth by getting involved with the Chefs Move to Schools! program! The commitment is small (9-10 days per year) and the opportunity to truly change the health of our youth is incredible.

Chefs Move! Highlights

Chef Deihl is blasting into August as he prepares his first session at Charles R. Drew Charter School. Chef Deihl has adopted Drew Charter school and will be focusing on three primary topics this year, reduce sodium, reduce sugar and reduce fat through sharing with the students at Drew (and their parents) healthy eating options and introducing new foods to the kids, such as fruits and vegetables.  August begins with the PreK class and a focus on reducing sugar.  We'll be reporting updates each month on the activities at Drew and as all you chefs begin your programs at your adopted schools please send in your updates so we can share our successes with our entire membership!

Chefs Move to Schools

Michael_Deihl_SE_Regional_SmallblockAs you are all aware, childhood obesity is on the rise and as chefs I believe we can help change the tide in Georgia. I am reaching out to you because we have an incredible opportunity to impact our children and become the catalyst to combat the epidemic of childhood obesity through a comprehensive approach with the Let's Move! program.  Similar to the seat belt program twenty years ago, where children were taught to wear their seat belts in school and passed it on to their parents, the Let's Move! program is looking to influence the schools, teachers and parents to change the way our children eat. Let's be real here, are there any better teachers than Chefs?  With our knowledge of food, our influence in the community and our passion for "making a difference" the time is right to truly help build a healthy future for our children.

As a committed culinary professional entering my 40th year in the industry, no one needs to tell me about chefs having to take on extra responsibilities when our time is so precious. But what is more precious than giving a child a chance to grow up without entering adulthood with the first signs of diabetes, high blood pressure or obesity. This has been talked about for a decade and nothing is being done. Well, I'm doing something about it in Atlanta and I hope you will all help me get the Let's Move! program off the ground.  All I need from you is maybe 9 - 10  days a year.

January TOT's Kitchen Report

We have come to appreciate those who are always looking out for us. Tots Kitchen could not be without the continued financial support of the ACF, Director, Members of the Board and Chapter Members. Our work of empowering the less fortunate with nutritional information and healthy snacks is a result of the ACF- Atlanta determination, year after year to stamp out hunger in our community.

Last month (December), we distributed 107 healthy snack packs and Christmas cookies packs (donated by a church). Each snack pack was loaded with breakfast, lunch and late snack items and an activity sheet with nutrition information.

Snacks:
Breakfast cereal
Shelf life milk
Blueberry waffles
Oranges and apples
Microwavable spaghetti and meatballs
100% Juicy juice
Pudding cups
Whole grain corn dogs
Oatmeal and raisin cookies

We had 10 nutrition and food prep classes with 138 students and 10 adults. There is so much need for parents to be educated about nutrition. There was one mother who did not know the nutritious benefits of vegetables. After the class, she asked if she could be a volunteer with us and she has been with us since

We added 4 schools with 73 new students who will participate in our holiday program only when school is out. They are: Gods House of Love, Wee Academy, Budding Scholars Center and Little Peoples Academy. There are six outstanding volunteers who help us with snacks distribution and a curriculum developer who works to help us where we need help.

The ACF- Atlanta is to be congratulated and thanked for the changes in the households of families in South Fulton. Overall, we have impacted more than 3000 children and their families with nutrition education and weekend back packs since January 2011. One woman came up to me in Kroger and asked her son if I was the vegetable lady. Her son had told her he should eat more vegetables, so she is buying more vegetables. Even on the streets, we meet children coming up to us and talking about how food will help them live longer and healthier. One of our teachers said a child told her that carrots makes a better snacks than what she had (an oatmeal bar). Teachers and parents alike are warming up to the fact that their children are being exposed to the real benefits of foods. Yes, we are making a difference in how our children influence their parents even in this way. This makes us really happy.

Sincerely,
Marie
